Geography and History for the student with a vision impairment
Map reading, due to size of print used in an atlas, is a great problem. The amount of detail presented on a map may be too confusing for the VI student. If having difficulty, it may be better to prepare a map with the barest of details and help the student fill in the lesson’s requirements from the atlas under your directions.
It should also be noted that some VI students may have
difficulties with colour perception and may be unable to
see certain details.
Sometimes, a series of simplified maps representing different details will enable the student to build up a clearer understanding of the concept which you are trying to teach.
Some maps even when enlarged can be made simpler by colour shading the important areas. This is necessary also with varied cross matching. Look at the details presented in graphs and tables. Make sure column details are clearly marked.
Often searching through another resource book or internet image resources will uncover a simpler map or table showing the same thing.
· Don’t forget: keep in touch with the ISTV to discuss any issues.
